Summary

Youth in rural Guatemala have few opportunities to immerse themselves in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Punto Crea are workshops where young people come together to develop STEAM and social-emotional skills through challenge-based learning. Your subscription will directly fund a facilitator and procure resources for one of Punto Crea's locations, serving disadvantaged youth in a rural municipality in Guatemala. Challenge

To succeed in current society youth need to think critically and creatively. They need to master skills in sciences, technology, engineering, arts and math, and also social-emotional skills that come together as problem solving. Indigenous youth in rural Guatemala have few opportunities for the hands-on education situations that best develop these skills. Schools lack workshop and laboratory resources and teachers the skills to structure effective challenge-based educational situations.

Solution

Punto Crea is a learning model that brings together an online/offline portfolio of STEAM learning challenges, tools and resources in a community-based lab/workshop, volunteer community-based tutoring, offsite technical support and training for tutors, certification of skills aligned with the national curriculum through open badges, and resource and support partners to offer small groups of youth opportunities to learn in a local, self-organized and safe but challenging environment.

Long-Term Impact

Through weekly attendance to a 2-hour session, at least 80 youth every 10 months (20 youth in each of 4 Punto Crea locations already operating) will master relevant skills in sciences, technology, engineering arts and math that will better prepare them for further formal or non-formal education, employment or entrepreneurship. Most significantly, they will develop critical and creative thinking skills expanding their flexibility as problem solvers.
