Urgent Funding Appeal for Champey Academy

By Barbara Rosasco | Secretary & Treasurer

Saturday, May 25, we reached a new record when a total of 152 students attended classes at Champey Academy.

Daily classes at Champey Academy are divided into a morning and an afternoon session and each half day class session is divided into two 90 minute segments separated by a 30 minute break.  We consider the maximum capacity of our space to be about 95 students per day.  Recently, we have been operating on most days at or very close to full capacity.  Saturday classes tend to be the most crowded, when Saturday May 25,  a total lof 152 students attended classes.

Please help us to  keep our programs operating

Thanks to our wonderfully talented and committed staff Champey Academy of Arts, our free program of traditional arts instruction for young people in Phnom Penh, continues to grow in popularity as we attract and serve increasing numbers of disadvantaged children from the city’s center. Our classes are consistently full, often exceeding the physical capacity of our facility

Champey is a lot  more than just an arts program... and all classes are offered to students free of charge

While we are, of course, proud of the fact that our school has become so popular among young people of all kinds in central Phnom Penh, we are especially proud of the role Champey Academy plays in providing a refuge for children facing special challenges.  These include kids from dysfunctional families or families which are too poor to care for them properly.  They also include children with learning disabilities and gender identification challenges  as well as some students would qualify as developmentally disabled.

At Champey Academy, all students are welcomed. All students have equal opportunities  to  learn and to have fun !

Phnom Penh institutions and organizations as well as the Cambodian government and, specifically, the Ministry of Education offer very little if any assistance to young people with special needs who are  facing challenges like these. Consequently, our Champey Academy plays a vitally  important role in offering a safe space for all of our kids.  At Champey Academy we make space for any child who wants to join our program of instruction, regardless of their specific challenges or special needs. We ask only that they try their best in class and that they are always respectful of the teachers and the other staff.  Mark spent five days in Phnom Penh in May and most of that time was devoted to observing the classes at Champey Academy.  He reports that at no time, did he observe even the mildest incident or lack of harmony  toward  or with any of the  kids in our classes who may be   challenged and who may have special needs.

Champey Academy is  facing  a financial cliff

Now that we are mid-way through the year, we are again facing extremely serious funding challenges. As we have reported previously, our reserve funds were exhausted during COVID, and although tourism has recovered, the guest fees that the school receives only support about half of the program cost at best. Additionally,  inflation has increased  some costs as well as creating  economic challenges for some of our donors, which means that donations are lower.

We urgently ask you to consider the life changing qualities that Champey offers its students. We are actively involved with our students and  we have many times over the years, served as the front line of protection against trafficking and other abuse, gang affiliation , social anxiety and preventing kids from dropping out of school to work to help support their families. Instead we pay a small stipend to the family if the student stays in school.

Longer term, you can see from our other programs  that the positive and steady influence of Kasumisou Foundation has provided   not only through its instruction in the arts, but through its ability to  offer meaningful employment and educational opportunities, as well as opportunities for public dance performance at the reknown Raffles Hotel, or student art exhibits.

Please help us to keep Kasumisou Foundation programs alive.

These programs  would not  be possible without the generous and kind support of you, our wonderful donors. You support, over the years  has transformed the lives of many of the students in Champey’s programs.

Please help us to keep Champey’s doors open.  At the current time, our funding will take us to about July 25.

We also hope that you will  join with us on July 10 for the GlobalGiving July Bonus Day when GlobalGiving will offer a donor match of 20%  to 40% on donations of $100 to $1000.

We are deeply grateful to you all for your support. Please feel free to contact us for additional information.
