Aligula Village borders Uasin Ngishu and Kakamega county in Kenya. This project plans to eradicate Jiggers through continuous Hygiene and Sanitation training to 300 women and 700 School children, that is; hand washing,making detergents, fumigation and medical treatment. The project will provide school children with shoes, dewormers and detergents. Women will be trained on proper methods of farming and cookery to improve their nutritional status and provide them with access to microfinance.
There are more than 1000 women and children at Aligula affected by Jiggers due to poor hygiene and sanitation. This leads to increased school drop out and absenteeism in children. It makes the women lack exposure, low self esteem due to stigma hence cannot access microfinance and healthcare due to their physical appearance. There is high mortality rate under 5 due to lack of access to Healthcare .ROCK will provide them with skills to better their lives and enable them improve their livelihoods.
ROCK provides life skills training on proper farming methods and cookery on balanced diet, provide them with materials e.g detergents, mats, threads and beads to make them more economically stable and reduce stigma. The women will manage to feed their families, cloth their children and access healthcare. Hence the rate of school drop out and absenteeism will reduce among school children. Women and children will make detergents for profit and also for personal use, leading to improved hygiene.
The project will enable 300 women to become productive and be able to eradicate poverty in their households. The women and children will become advocates and will help spread information and training to prevent Jiggers in the community. The women will be economically empowered hence they will access healthcare, and cloth their children, enabling them to attend school and reduce stigma.
