Support 30 Women in Ullo to Increase Crop Yield

 Angelina used to face daily struggles as a groundnut farmer in the Ullo traditional area in Ghana’s Upper West Region. With little money for seeds and fertilizers, her harvests became small, and feeding her family felt like an uphill battle. She worked hard, but with limited resources, making ends meet seemed impossible.

That all changed when she connected with Self-Help International.

Through Self-Help, Angelina received the essential support she desperately needed—an acre of land, quality seeds, fertilizers, and financial assistance. Armed with these resources, she was able to expand her farm from just 1 acre to an impressive 7 acres. Today, she not only grows groundnuts but also soybeans and maize, producing more food than she ever thought possible.

The impact on her family has been life-changing. Each harvest, Angelina now has enough crops to sell at the market, providing a steady income for her household. What’s more, she sets aside enough food to ensure her family never goes hungry.

“Thanks to Self-Help International, my small farm has become more than just a plot of land—it’s a source of security and a beacon of hope for the future. I no longer worry about the provision of my children.” Angelina shared.  Instead, she’s building a better life for them through her yield increase.

Meet Zipoge, one of eight small-scale farmers who, with your support through Self-Help International (SHI), now owns a single-row push planter. 

Zipoge is a hardworking farmer and a grain trader in the Kogri community. Before, she struggled to make ends meet, buying small quantities of grain to resell and farming less than an acre of land.

With the help of a single-row push planter, Zipoge's farming became easier and more fulfilling. She also received a loan to cultivate an acre of sorghum and cowpea. The planter made planting more efficient compared to manual planting with sticks and machetes.

She shared, "I never dreamt of harvesting three bags of grains. But thanks to SHI’s support, I harvested five bags of sorghum, each weighing 50 kg (110 lbs), and 150 kg (331 lbs) of cowpeas. This was possible due to the good agronomic practices SHI taught us and the micro loans they gave to us to purchase seeds and fertilizers on time."

With this yield, Zipoge can sell some and use the rest at home. The income allows her to buy grains in larger quantities, store them, and resell them when prices are better, increasing her profits.
