Between June 21-22, 2022 a devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the region of Paktika and Khost Provinces, eastern Afghanistan bordering Pakistan. According to a report released by the OCHA on June 23, approximately 770 people were estimated to have been killed. The number of deaths continues to rise and is currently estimated to be nearly 1,150.
While the full impact of the earthquake is yet to be known, we know that cholera is already starting to wreak havoc in the country with an estimated 500,000 reported cases so far. Both the WHO and UNHCR have provided medical supplies and essential items like tents, blankets, and kitchen sets for over 600 families, but that number is growing rapidly and already shortages are being experienced such as food, medical supplies and tents which means families are without their basic needs.
As a humanitarian support to the victims - AfD will be delivering support to those who have suffered from this earthquake. Humanitarian relief funds are essential to the success of ensuring safety in times of natural disaster in fragile regions of conflict, and we need your help. By donating you will be providing families and individuals with hope, safety, and reassurance for the future as well as practical items like food and water filters.
The long-term impact of the earthquake crisis in Afghanistan will depend on how we act now in this moment to support the victims and humanitarian relief efforts. Infrastructures, communities, and lives will need to be rebuilt which may take years - but for the immediate future we focus on the lives and safety of individuals affected by the crisis. We hope that by supporting the victims with your help, that a safe and stable platform can be created for them to create their futures.
