Fursan Al-Erada (Knights of Will) is a local radio station in Gaza Strip run by the disabled for the disabled. The women journalists are blind and need access to new equipment to report on issues.
There are four blind women working at this station as producers and show hosts - two of them are partially blind and two completely blind. Because of the blockade on Gaza, these women have no access to new technology or equipment for the blind. They use what is available for them, mainly Braille typewriter machines and slate and stylus (a handheld Braille device). This makes it difficult for them to access information on the Internet and to be independent in their work.
Supplying new equipment for the blind will allow them to work independently and with greater efficiency. This will also allow the station to employ more blind people and train them on the new equipment, and share stories via an affiliate network.
This project will improve the journalists’ performance and their ability to inform their communities, and encourage more disabled people to venture into the world of media. The project aims to change the perceptions of the disabled in the region.
