Finding new ways to fight one of the deadliest brain tumors

By Lisa Luescher | Research Funding

Exploring new ways to combat glioblastoma
Exploring new ways to combat glioblastoma

The proverb “Paths are made by walking” reminds us that action is the catalyst for progress and transformation. The same holds true in research — developing groundbreaking therapies often requires stepping off the beaten track. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, neurosurgeon Dr. Jorn Fierstra is doing just that.

In his innovative study, Dr. Fierstra is exploring new ways to combat one of the deadliest forms of cancer: glioblastoma.

His research team is developing advanced imaging techniques to enhance the detection of malignant brain tumors and improve treatment for patients. Glioblastoma, the most aggressive type of brain tumor, frequently affects younger individuals. Unfortunately, standard MRI imaging struggles to visualize it effectively, making treatment planning and monitoring extremely challenging.

Dr. Fierstra’s goal is to pioneer a new MRI technique capable of measuring both blood flow and oxygen deprivation within these tumors. This is crucial, as low oxygen levels signal tumor invasion and therapy resistance — two factors that drastically impact patient survival. If successful, his research could revolutionize treatment strategies, enable earlier relapse detection, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Your donations are making a lasting impact. Discover how Dr. Fierstra and his research team are finding new ways to fight one of the deadliest brain tumors, thanks to the support of generous donors like you.
