Keeping Emergency Response Capacity Ready

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

The end of Uganda's Ebola outbreak does not mean that emergency response capacity should be dismantled. Instead, the current situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrates why communities must remain prepared to respond rapidly to any future health alert.

Uganda was officially declared Ebola-free on July 28 after completing the required 42-day monitoring period without a new locally transmitted case. However, WHO has emphasized that Uganda remains at risk of imported cases because Ebola transmission continues in neighboring DRC.

Development Alert is maintaining the response capacity developed during the outbreak. This includes community communication networks, trained volunteers, relationships with local health facilities, and field transportation capabilities.

The field motorcycle purchased to support contact tracing, emergency response, and delivery of supplies continues to provide important mobility. In remote border communities where roads can be difficult and transportation options limited, having reliable field transportation means teams can reach communities more quickly when an alert or urgent need arises.

The motorcycle can support rapid delivery of educational materials, hygiene supplies, and other response resources while enabling field teams to conduct community visits and follow-up activities. Maintaining this capacity is an investment in preparedness rather than simply an emergency expense.

The continuing DRC crisis—with more than 4,400 confirmed cases and more than 2,000 deaths—demonstrates the consequences of delayed detection and difficult access to affected communities.

Your support has helped build a stronger grassroots response system in Uganda. We are committed to preserving that progress and ensuring border communities remain ready, informed, and capable of responding quickly to protect lives.
