Women are taking water
Women are taking water

A new day starts with a beautiful sunrise. Coastal people come to BANOJIBI for collecting safe drinking water with smiling face. The water supply service is started from the crow calls dawn and local community is benefited for drinking safe water.

Safe drinking water scarcity is a daily problem in coastal areas of the Sundarbans due to geographical reasons. Due to salinity, 73 percent of people are at risk of various diseases including water scarcity. The stories of women from far and wide collecting small amounts of water by spending a lot of time to meet their daily needs are not unknown to anyone. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) implemented a method and run Social Business model at field level from 2015 to overcome this crisis with the combination of the local and modern technology of water conservation through the Sundarbans Professional Cooperative Society, named 'Rain water purification by pond sand filtration (PSF) and Reverse Osmosis system powered by Solar energy'.  Through which solar energy is used to purify the stored rainwater and make it potable through Reverse Osmosis system (RO).

From Lipika Mistry, North Banishanta, Khulna, Bangladesh. “We used to drink pond water and we were not healthy by drinking that. We used to get sick all the time due to the contaminated water. We had belly pain, diarrhoea, dysentery continuously. BEDS came to this area and supported us to establish safe water plant. Now we collect the water from the plant and drink it. Our families are being healthy by drinking this safe water.”  The model is able to produce 42,000 litters of fresh water daily, which can provide safe drinking water to 12,000 people.

Expansion of this model can ensure safe water supply to a wide range of coastal populations, the coast is a freshwater-rich locality.

We would like to thank all our donors for their amazing and continuous support for the coastal deprived people. We are requesting all our donors to start monthly recurring donation by clicking the following link;
