Tarr Fellows help transform local communities

By Sherry DeLeon | Executive Director

The Tarr Fellowship, supported by the American Friends of Asian Rural Institute, has been instrumental in fostering community development across various countries through innovative projects led by its fellows. Here is a brief overview of the impact these fellows are having on their communities:
Impact Highlights

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security:

  • Channappa Gaiangappa (India) is working on organic food security by rebuilding soil fertility and promoting climate restoration. His project involves technical assistance to farmers and educational programs for local schools to encourage sustainable agriculture practices
  • Huung Ngoc Duc (Vietnam) provides training in organic farming methods for farmers and students, enhancing practical skills in sustainable agriculture
  • Veny Julita and Kengo Ishida (Indonesia) focus on creating local food security through food forests, promoting diverse cropping and organic farming to increase livelihoods

Empowerment and Income Generation:

  • Gabriel Gonmei (India) trains rural women in mushroom cultivation as an income-generating activity, enhancing economic opportunities for women in rural areas
  • Joseph Kora (Papua New Guinea) assists amputees in implementing sustainable agriculture practices, such as vegetable harvesting and poultry training, to generate income

Social and Environmental Impact:

  • Junpiter Pakpahan (Indonesia) focuses on disability services and advocacy, improving community support for disabled members
  • Tangka Eric Dindze (Cameroon) uses a train-the-trainer model to reduce gender-based violence by empowering women group leaders
  • Murorunkwere Saidath (Rwanda) empowers children with livestock management skills through a "one chicken per child" project, combating malnutrition and fostering financial independence

Overall, the Tarr Fellows are making significant contributions to their communities by promoting sustainable practices, empowering marginalized groups, and fostering economic development. Their projects not only address immediate needs but also build long-term resilience and capacity within their communities. This impact is thanks to the support of generous donors like you. On behalf of AFARI, we thank you for your support.
