Support for migrant background children in Korea

By Su Kyeong Lee | Corporate Social Impact Initiative Team Staff

The first challenge for migrant background children - Giving up on their dreams
Children from migrant backgrounds face many challenges in their growing up environment, including economic, communication, and emotional difficulties. While 67.6% of all students in South Korea go on to higher education, only 48,6% of children from migrant backgrounds go on to higher education.

The second challenge - Unstable household income
Children from migrant backgrounds live in low-income families, many of which are single-parent households, making it difficult for them to grow up in a stable environment.
The rate of NEET* youth is also three times higher than the general youth.
("NEET" refers to people who are unemployed and not in education or training for employment.)

The third challenge - Marginalization and loneliness
Many migrant children have experienced discrimination in South Korea. Their self-esteem is lower than that of the general population at 3.63 on a 5-point scale.

ChildFund Korea has been supporting children from various migrant backgrounds, including multicultural, mid-entry, and refugee, to stabilize and grow up as healthy members of society.

Donations have been used to support education to improve Korean language and literacy skills for children from migrant backgrounds, to pay for infant care and parental education for migrant families, and to support other needs of migrant families such as medical expenses, psychotherapy, and nutritious food.

Please join us in helping Korean immigrant children grow up to be a part of the wonderful and supportive Korean society!
