Support Still Urgently Needed Despite Initial Relief Efforts

On March 28th, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck large parts of Myanmar and Thailand, causing widespread destruction, especially in Mandalay, Sagaing, and Bangkok. Thousands of families have lost their homes and access to basic necessities. In response, Caritas and its local partners have swiftly launched emergency relief efforts to assist the affected communities.

What Has Been Achieved So Far:

  • Emergency Shelter: Materials for temporary shelters have already been provided to 150 households in Nyaungshe.
  • Food and Water: Clean drinking water and essential food supplies have been distributed to 250 households in Pyi Ma Na and Popa Kone. Together with the WFP, over 2,200 households in Mingalar Yankin and Pathein Gyi townships have received food assistance.
  • Non-Food Items: In cooperation with UNHCR, essential items like blankets, mosquito nets, kitchen sets, and tarpaulins are currently being distributed to 1,000 households.
  • Cash Assistance: Financial support has reached nearly 100 households in the Sagaing region and the St. Michael community.

These efforts were made possible by Caritas' strong local presence and the rapid mobilization of resources. However, the scale of devastation means that thousands remain in urgent need of further assistance.

What Is Still Needed:

  • Emergency Shelter: Many families are still sleeping outdoors and urgently need protection from the elements.
  • Non-Food Items (NFIs): Clothing, blankets, and household supplies are essential for basic survival.
  • WASH Support: Access to clean water and hygiene products, including menstrual hygiene kits, is critical. In areas with poor sanitary conditions, mobile toilets and hygiene facilities are urgently required to prevent disease outbreaks.
