Summary

To tackle youth economic vulnerability, in the rural area of Ross Bethio (Saint-Louis, Senegal), Association Jeunesse Espoir is setting up a green agricultural incubator for the training, the coaching and the formalization of 100 young girls' startups in different agricultural sectors. This incubation is also intended to provide an effective response against illegal emigration of young girls to Europe and rural exodus to urban areas so that the latter can succeed on their own land.

Challenge

The populations living in the rural area of Ross-Bethio live in endemic poverty causing among young people, most of whom are without education or training, crucial employment problems and scourges such as illegal emigration and rural exodus, despite the presence of natural resources that could help. Surveys have clearly shown that women and girls are the ones who suffer most from this precarious situation because they suffer doubly oppression: poverty and the weight of traditional social norms.

Solution

AJE is setting up an agricultural incubator which will first train 100 young girls in the various agricultural and livestock sectors: horticulture, cattle fattening, fish farming, poultry farming and the use of renewable energies for good environmental preservation . These trained young girls will be supported towards autonomy through agricultural entrepreneurship thanks to the resources generated during their incubation. Vocational training is the way to decent work for young girls.

Long-Term Impact

Thanks to this project 100 young girls will be trained and supported in the start-up of their startups after incubation. The resources generated by the incubator will allow the economic integration of the young people incubated and the enrollment each year of a new cohort of young girls to start their training before their turn to be supported in agricultural entrepreneurship. This will be an effective response to youth illegal emigration and employment problems which accentuate their poverty
