Maintaining Montessori Guides' Assistant position is vital for the strengthening of educational services and the reconstruction of the social fabric of the communities we serve. We have 194 Assistants serving around 5,500 children. They contribute to the social transformation of their community through work with children, providing an optimal environment for learning and growth of the child and youth, through their training as assistant and their integration into work force of our communities.
Puerto Rico crisis' is evidenced by an increase in the unemployment rate, poverty level of the population and we add Hurricane Maria. The possibility of an unprecedented increase in the unemployment rate is due to the amount of businesses not operating after Hurricane. 30 days after Hurricane, the number of requests processed by Unemployment Insurance incentive was greater than a month before the Hurricane. It's imperative to take care of existing jobs in order to prevent an humanitarian crisis.
INE's goal after Hurricane Maria is to contribute to the social and economic recovery of Puerto Rico through education, maintenance of Montessori Guides' Assistants and rehabilitation of the "social fabric" of the communities we serve. These schools are in poor and traditionally marginalized sectors: Barranquitas, Humacao, Luis Llorens Torres, Cantera, Vieques, among others highlighted by their poverty and inaccessibility to basic resources. Only 65% indicated that were active in the labor force
Maintaining Montessori Guides' Assistant position contributes to the social and economic transformation of the communities we serve through employ for community members, provide educational opportunities to their Assistants, promote individuals' professional development and transfer a culture of peace to their homes and community. It should be noted that a large part of our Assistants are heads of family and take their livelihoods to their homes, with this project we give them an income to help.
