Summary

This project will provide 2,400 new mothers in Myanmar, with a baby kit that contains essential health and hygiene items to give their babies a healthy start in life. These kits help improve the mothers' and babies' lives in Karen State, which has one of the highest rates of maternal and newborn mortality in the world.

Challenge

In Karen State, women and children live in communities that have suffered for many years from extreme poverty, lack of basic health services and education and ongoing violence due to the effects of the military offensives against ethnic groups. Even now, many thousands of Karen women in rural and border areas still live in fear and uncertainty. Women's health suffers greatly under these conditions and Karen State has one of the highest rates of maternal and newborn mortality in the world.

Solution

We provide practical help for mothers with essential items including laundry and body soap, cloth wraps, nail clippers and and a health message, to give their babies a good start in life. This message is crucial for new mothers, as it addresses the problem of infant and maternal mortality by educating them and allowing them to interact with others through the community health workers, who distribute the kits. Many mothers are also illiterate so the workers can give the information in person.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 2,400 mothers with items and information needed to give their babies a good start in life. With such limited access to health services and education, the information provided helps the mothers to understand how to care for their baby and ensure they stay healthy in the long term. This knowledge can be shared within their community, helping to look after the next generation.
