Women share information

By Jane Best | Project leader

As we have recently celebrated International Women’s Day, we draw attention to how the Maternal Health project empowers women in displaced communities to have some control over their lives through education and improved understanding of their health.

As the women share their knowledge of health and nutrition with other women, they assume a role in improving their communities.

In the last year the trainers have provided information to over 3,000 community members in Kawthoolei (the traditional Karen name for their homeland) through distribution of material including health trainer manuals, reporting documents, illustrated nutrition booklets and posters. The illustrations are important because some of the women are unable to read.

One of the most appreciated topics was "Nutrition of 3 food groups". Many participants reported that they typically consumed only one food group per meal. Sometimes this was due to a lack of food, but, even when more food is available, there is a lack of knowledge about good nutrition especially for pregnant and lactating women.

The hygiene items provided in the kit are hard to find now in the displacement areas and many mothers mentioned that they could not afford to buy wraps for their newborns, so they tore up old clothes instead. Their main priority is to buy food for the family and there may not be enough money to buy hygiene items for a new baby. The contents of the baby kit reduce their worries and financial burden, and help them directly to keep baby and themselves cleaner.

One mother said “I am very happy that I joined the awareness raising session and I can share this information with other women so that it will help other babies. There are still stereotypes in our community, which will need constant health awareness raising to reduce this kind of wrong thinking.“
