Improve Health for Mothers and Babies in Myanmar

In the last year funds to the Maternal Health program provided 965 baby kits containing essential hygiene items that have benefited 965 mothers with new-born babies in 7 Districts in Kawthoolei (Karen state), Myanmar. The beneficiaries were women and others in communities who have been displaced by army attacks, and those in the conflict-affected areas.

The supply and distribution of baby kits was conducted using systems developed in recent years and adapted to security measures due to the conflict and violence caused by attacks on civilians.

Project staff organized to send cash to selected sites and the local leaders then purchased materials for the baby kits locally. Each district selected one or two safe and accessible townshipsto receive the Kits.

In addition to distribution of Baby kits the field co-ordinators worked with the township women leaders to conduct health awareness raising sessions in each community.

There were 91 maternal health awareness raising sessions reaching a total of 9,160 participants (7,499 women and 1,661 men).

These maternal health awareness raising sessions were delivered by Field Co-ordinators and Assistants, with the local women leaders and staff, using the health education materials and the baby kit health message. The trainers conducted the awareness sessions in villages and in Internal Displacement sites. In some cases, they grouped participants of two or three nearby villages together. Topics included: nutrition and hygiene for mother, baby and family, and good health for women during pregnancy, delivery, and maternity.

Increased knowledge of maternal, infant and community health topics which focus on nutrition and sanitation, improves health and saves lives. Adults and children can eat better and can be cleaner and prevent common diseases. The sessions also provide social and emotional support for a traumatized community.

The situation for the more 2 million women and children displaced in Myanmar has worsened with the cold weather. As one worker noted, hiding does not protect people from the cold, and the suffering grows. This further increases health risks for mothers and newborns.

The dedicated community workers in the maternal health program have reported that they reached several new displaced communities to ensure that families are safe and supported and that new mothers receive necessary help and advice. They acknowledge the help of community leaders and responsible authorities who continue to liaise with these workers to access even the most isolated and displaced groups, often in dangerous and remote conditions.

One community worker shared: “It has become harder for us to help and follow up, but if we don't do it, who will? We are determined to provide what support we can.”

The nutritional support has proved invaluable. New mothers received basic nutrition through the provision of dried beans, which are critical for recovery and breastfeeding.

Despite escalating violence, harsh environmental conditions, and limited resources, community teams remain committed to supporting displaced women and children. Their determination ensures that essential maternal health services and nutritional support continue to reach those most in need, even in the most difficult circumstances.
