The Karen women have been working for 39 years in the camps on the Thai-Myanmar border and inside Karen state, supporting thousands of people displaced from their homes. Their resilience and determination ensures that communities connect with others facing the same challenges, helping to alleviate the feeling of isolation.
This is a bigger challenge during the rainy season when access is difficult. Rains have been particularly heavy this year and communities rely on the women who have received health training previously to support their neighbours until community workers can access the region again soon.
At this time the women are upgrading their skills and learning through training sessions covering health, child rights, psycho-social issues as well as updates on the latest insurgencies and subsequent displacements.
One worker who expressed hope that they will be able to reach the communities soon said: “We should continue to help them, engage them, and support them in ways that empower them.”
