Giving birth in the jungle

Local transportation to reach the displaced
Local transportation to reach the displaced

Since the Myanmar coup in 2021, health workers have been collaborating with community organizations that have ground staff in most districts. These staff liaise with local leaders, who maintain contact with villages in Karen State to monitor the latest displacement trends throughout the province.

Air attacks occur almost daily, often targeting temples, hospitals, and schools. As a result, people avoid these buildings when seeking shelter. Community workers seek out the hiding places to join the displaced individuals to deliver essential health kits and provide training. They reach them however they can. Some on foot, others using local carts while the fortunate few can use motor scooters.

Their dedication to ensuring new mothers and babies receive the support they need is truly inspiring.

The current funding will will reach1,200 mothers through half-day discussions held alongside distributions of the baby kits. Additionally, 140 one-day sessions will be conducted on general women’s health, community hygiene, and nutrition education across villages in seven districts. These sessions will benefit at least 4,400 participants, primarily women and girls. So far, the teams have covered 30% of the scheduled activities, with another 8 months to go.

Mothers can see how their children's health is improved through this training compared to children born earlier and the care that the health workers provide brings personal comfort to communities that are forgotten by much of the world.

With international aid cuts affecting communities worldwide, our direct funding to local initiatives is more crucial than ever. Thank you for your continued support.
