Our Amazon Youth Project works in remote communities of the Peruvian Amazon. We run capacity-building and personal development workshops for 400 young people aged 15-18 years old. We are also training 30 educators on topics of sexual and reproductive health, cultural identity and vocational skills, while providing higher education scholarships and a Youth Hub for 11 students. Our goal is to empower resilient young people who will contribute to a sustainable future for the Amazon region.
Almost one fifth of the population of Loreto live in extreme poverty. Education quality is worst in the remote rural regions of Peru, especially in the rainforest, which has the lowest rate of primary school literacy and numeracy. Poverty, lack of support and geographical barriers (the main city of Iquitos can only be accessed by boat or plane), limit indigenous young people's access to further education and formal employment, making it all but impossible for them to break the poverty cycle.
The main aim of the project is that 400 young people from remote communities in the Amazon Rainforest have the personal skills, resilience and capacities to access higher education and fair employment, preparing them for the next phase of their lives. Our tutors guide young people to explore different scholarship and vocational opportunities, with a key focus on the themes of sexual health, environmental sustainability, professional orientation and indigenous cultural identity.
Our goal is that the young people of our Amazon Youth Project will become the first generation of professionals in their districts with the capacity to break the poverty cycle for their families. We will empower young people with a sense of cultural pride and confidence in who they are, building self-esteem and strong interpersonal skills. This will ultimately lead to young people resilient to the challenges of life after school and more likely to follow their dreams for the future.
