Social and career training is very helpful for young adults because it can be applied in their lives through skills, knowledge and experience. Our aim is to promote our young adults’ health and hygiene by conducting lessons and promoting good practices. Please read on to find out more about how Life Skills students benefit from the sessions.

There have been many positive results from our life skill project in the last three months. Our students have benefitted from knowledge and experiences on various topics related to health, hygiene and work experience. Firstly, they are now able to recognize the symptoms of illnesses such as colds, TB, dengue fever, malaria, HIV and chronic diseases, and how disease and infection can be caused in their daily lives. Students are also aware of how to avoid communicable diseases.

Secondly, to help them avoid diseases, students learnt both theory and good practices from our workshops, including hand washing and teeth brushing. The students are now able to differentiate between hygiene and sanitation, and understand the effects of having a lack of either. The students were also instructed on the general health benefits of playing sports and going to the gym.

The students learn about the risks associated with underage sexual intercourse, and about safe sex and the use of protection. The importance and use of condoms were explained and general family planning advice given.

The students have also been given experience and training in various hotel departments, such as the role of front of house staff and their responsibilities. Students visited Soria Moria Boutique Hotel (www.thesoriamoria.com) and a guest speaker, Mr. Chhunlim Chuot, from Pacific Hotel & Spa shared his experiences at a workshop on Front Office Department Work at our school.

One student, Sambath shared her feelings about health and hygiene she has learnt: “First time, I don’t think health and hygiene are important. So it is no problem but after I finished the lessons, I understand and get some knowledge why we need a good health and hygiene. Health is a condition of body and when we have a good health, we are free from illness and hygiene can keep and help people or environment clean. Especially, it can help our body escapes from diseases. As the results, I am aware of the benefits when we have a good health and hygiene. We can prevent from any diseases, we do not spend money lots for medicine, and we do not spend sometimes for treatment. Furthermore, when having a good health and hygiene can help us to do anything, such as work, study as well as business. Finally, I think that the lessons are the most important. Having a good health is wealthy. So we should eat right, live right everyday”.

In the coming three months, we will organize further visits to local businesses, youth employment services and vocational training centers, and conduct a workshop related to traffic laws and a cooking lesson.

We are very proud to have provided this extremely valuable course, and we would like to thank all donors again who supported us through Global Giving. With the help of our partners at Global Giving, and you, we hope to keep building on this and moving forward with our personal and career training program for young adults.

Warm regards,

The Salariin Kampuchea Team
