How's things going so far? You can be the judge

By Patricia Wilkins | Executive Director

Our last report told you about a young man, who started in this program when he was 7 years old.  His story is like many children; he never had any formal education, he was enrolled in our program, and he thrived in an environment that didnt support his desire to be educated.     His hard work paid off as he recently completed unversity , as a First Class Honor student.    As we continue to highlight Obed, and celebrate his achievements, our achievements- there are many others- THRIVING to have the same end story.

their beginnings are identical - born in a fishing village, to fisher folks , or young parents- who either dont have the means to educate their children or no desire .   or is it that bleak?  How could someone not have any desire to give a better life to their child?     Well, as we have been in the community for 22 years, we write this with confidence that desire, simply means - I dont know how to!      Most children are the first generation to attend school or surpassing the class ( grade) their parents did when they were in school.    So the lack of knowing what benefits school has is unknown for many.   However, for some its not - when they continously watch children like Obed come through our program; and WIN!

Our work  22 years ago started with a simple mission " END CYCLES of ILLITERACY"      what that meant was change the desire, the understanding, and preception of education in a community- that put education last.

A vibrant fishing community,  that has seen many changes from no electricity - to electricity poles everywhere, to an increased population to an already densly populated community- and more small businesses opening , due to the fishing industry dying off. -  Chorkor is known for its teenage pregnancy,  or pre teen pregnancy, and children seen all the streets all day.   But we are optimistic that the CYCLE is ending , and more children will be in school and stay in school.

Our fundraiser has reached nearly $4000 online, and an additonal $5000 off line.  - which gives us hope that the cycle will end, one day.

We encourage you to share this update with friends, brag about what you have helped us do,   Share Obed story.   and let them know we have 125 other students who would like to be like OBED.
