Summary

This project will ensure 346 girls in a rural Congolese village receive a high-quality education that they would otherwise be denied. Girls who attend the Malaika school receive everything they need to be successful including uniforms, shoes, supplies, health check-ups and two healthy meals per day. In a village without running water or electricity, our students receive an education that includes STEM, English and arts programs, preparing them to become leaders locally and globally.

Challenge

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo girls are routinely excluded from education and therefore denied denied the opportunity to progress and take advantage of the opportunities their male peers are presented. Only 14.5% of women have completed secondary school. In Kalebuka, where Malaika operates, the literacy rate for women is 4%. This project will educate girls and give them the tools they need to become leaders and empower their community.

Solution

Malaika provides a free, fully accredited school for 346 girls in Kalebuka, DRC. Everything the students need to be successful is provided including uniforms and school supplies. Knowing the importance of nutrition and health to a quality education, Malaika also provides regular health check-ups and two healthy meals per day. Girls who would have never had the opportunity to attend school are now studying English and STEM and planning for future careers.

Long-Term Impact

Over 400 girls will receive a high quality education that will prepare them to become the future leaders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and give back to their community. Our students now dream of becoming scientists, doctors, teachers, politicians, etc., and of occupying major leadership positions beyond their immediate community. They will be the authors of their own history and positively change the future of the DRC.
