Summary

Covid-19 is worsening inequities in our education system. Where school closures abruptly stopped learning for millions of children in low-income communities with limited access to technology, Teach For Pakistan Fellows established innovative learning routines for students using WhatsApp, SMS, calls, and printed learning packs. Moving forward, we want to support the system in offsetting the learning losses, caring for emotional & mental well-being of students, and safe re-opening of schools.

Challenge

Covid-19's impact on children living in poverty is potentially devastating and long-term. Students who couldn't access traditional online schooling via PCs and tablets lost months of learning gains, suffered mental & emotional distress and may not even return to schools. Studies suggest that learning losses due to temporary disruptions may cumulate over time and flatten the learning curve in the long-run. Is our system equipped to respond to the evolving needs of students when schools re-open?

Solution

Now more than ever, low-income students need teachers who innovate to keep them connected to their school, learning activities and future aspirations. Teach For Pakistan Fellows - outstanding university graduates - have pioneered approaches for their 2,500 students across rural Islamabad to continue learning via WhatsApp, SMS, calls and learning packs. They need your help to continue remote support to vulnerable children now, and meet their additional, complex learning needs when schools resume.

Long-Term Impact

Studies on school closures in crises show that learning disruptions have severe, long-term consequences on children's mental and emotional health, school completion and future earnings. Low-income schools lack the capacity to diagnose and address individual needs even when kids return to school, so the learning losses accumulate. By enabling our Fellows today, you will equip 2,500 students to continue their promising education journey, and lead their communities to a safe and prosperous future.
