Empowering Educators for long-term impact!

Fellows expressing their journey as STEM teachers
Fellows expressing their journey as STEM teachers

Dear partner,

We hope you are well. The turn of the season brings exciting news for us all: as the academic year is soon coming to a close, Teach For Pakistan is reflecting on the support offered to first-year Fellows as they begin their last year of teaching and to second-year Fellows as they prepare for their future journeys as Alumni! These past few months Teach For Pakistan has focused deeply on supporting our Fellows through several trainings and sessions in service of creating transformational classrooms where students have access to subject-specific support, safe classroom spaces, and how Alumni can go on to create system-level impact.

Safe Classrooms = Exceptional Classrooms!

Teach For Pakistan classrooms are unique not only because they are a site of quality and engaged learning, but also safe spaces for students to express themselves freely and without fear. Our Fellows work closely with their students in order to create these classrooms, and continually evolve their strategies to make sure they are conducive spaces of learning. To further facilitate Fellows with this, first-year Fellows participated in an intensive one-day training to learn strategies on creating safe classrooms. The training was meant to support Fellows in three ways: increase awareness of their own selves and how to be a secure adult, understanding how trauma and stressors can manifest in students' behaviour in the classroom and what this means, and strategies on how to best create safe classrooms for students to thrive in. This training was particularly helpful for Fellows as they prepare to enter their final year of the Fellowship: it enables them to strengthen the foundations of the relationships built in their first year and create a long-lasting impact on a child's emotional well-being.

"Understanding the context in which students live and learn is essential for tailoring teaching approaches and interventions effectively. Additionally, providing a safe space within the learning environment allows children to feel secure and comfortable, which in turn promotes engagement and enhances their learning skills."

- First-year Fellow Usama

"To foster a growth mindset in students, teachers must first cultivate it within themselves."

- First-year Fellow Shazmina

Exploring Science and Mathematics: A curious approach!

In early March, first-year Fellows teaching STEM subjects were offered targeted support through interactive sessions designed to augment Fellows' understanding of STEM-teaching strategies. These sessions pushed Fellows to interact with and think more on inquiry-based learning and foundational skills, and designing experiments themselves for a more robust understanding of how they could replicate these strategies and techniques in their respective classrooms tailored to their students' contexts and needs. Fellows also had the chance to participate in Science and Math-specific sessions: the former in which they were equipped with tools to design compelling lessons to engage students and the latter in which they focused on strategies for struggling students to master the basics of mathematics. Pushing Fellows to engage deeply with STEM-teaching strategies brings them one step closer to transforming their students into curious learners capable of critical thinking in Science and Mathematics.

End-of-Term Training

Before the academic term comes to an end, Teach For Pakistan conducted a training session for first-year Fellows that would enable their transition into the second and last year of the Fellowship. Fellows reflected on progress made towards their classroom vision they set at the start of the Fellowship and followed up with deepening their vision and goal-setting for the next academic year. To make this vision a reality, Fellows also worked to understand the significance of establishing strong relationships with key stakeholders, particularly with parents as this is a huge support in enabling Fellows to actualize their vision for their students. As they are on the path of beginning their last year of the Fellowship, Fellows deepened their understanding of leadership that catalyzes systemic change and long-term impact as a means to live into these principles in the coming year.

"Working in collaboration is crucial to support kids in their academics and overall well being. To bring long lasting transformational impact we must immerse ourselves in the community and instead of imposing our own vision on them, get into dialogue with parents and community, take their feedback and formulate a collective vision that is grounded in context and history of the community."

- First-year Fellow Ghousia

"The training reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of parent-teacher collaboration and inspired me to strengthen these relationships to maximize the impact of my teaching on student outcomes."

- First-year Fellow Shafaq

Journey to Alumnihood

As our second-year Fellows are on their way to completing their Fellowship journey, Teach For Pakistan has been working closely with them to prepare them for their journeys as future Alumni. In late-March, second-year Fellows participated in training and sessions that aimed for them to deepen their understanding of the challenges associated with system-change, explore specific pathways to effect change, and begin to craft their own theories of change. These sessions were integral as they enabled future Alumni to begin thinking more deeply about system-level impact to change the educational landscape of Pakistan and position themselves as the leading force in the movement to end educational inequity.
