Transforming Teaching for Student Success!

Fellows in a session on stakeholder management
Fellows in a session on stakeholder management

Dear friend,

We hope that the changing seasons and fast-approaching summer brings with it hope and optimism for the latter half of the year. With the academic year coming to a close soon, our first-year Fellows are preparing for the new school session and second-year Fellows are spending the next month cementing what they and their students have learned together over the last two years. We are excited to share with you some of the highlights from our work in the past quarter.

Teacher Growth = Student Growth!

January-March 2023 has seen an intensive focus on Fellows’ pedagogical growth, with several trainings and sessions; developing strategies to aid in literacy development, using classroom data to inform planning, reflecting on and deepening their vision, and developing clarity on what student outcomes look like and how to work towards them.

“I gained insight into areas of high growth and areas of low growth…I am motivated to leverage my enablers, overcome my disablers, and adopt effective strategies to facilitate optimal student outcomes”

-        Second-year Fellow Benish

“Revisiting values is an essential exercise that helped me understand the underlying principles that guide my actions and decisions. This exercise allows me to gain a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of purpose, which helps me align my actions with my beliefs”

-        Second-year Fellow Awais

Fellows also re-connected with their purpose in their work and reflected on the importance of investing parents in their children’s future and learning ways to strengthen stakeholder relations.

“By taking time each month to reflect on what has helped me and hindered me, I can make necessary adjustments and continue moving towards success. This practice can also help me identify patterns and areas for improvement, ultimately leading to more effective learning strategies and better outcomes.”

-        Fist-year Fellow Shahbaz

“Parents play a critical role in their children’s education and development, and working together with them will help students grow to their full potential…working together in collaboration with parents can result in better learning for students and create a space for them to work collectively towards a shared vision that can help a student succeed”

-        First-year Fellow Kashmala

In March, Fellows teaching STEM subjects were offered targeted support through a training that would enable their students to engage with Science through hands-on learning opportunities and to understand the real world application of the scientific knowledge they would be gaining. Fellows worked in groups to conduct experiments themselves to engage with the teaching material they would soon be replicating in their own classrooms!

The training was unique as it was designed to cater to classrooms and schools with limited access to materials and resources for science experiments – a context our Fellows are familiar with – rather making use of everyday household items that can double as equipment!

Transforming Education Survey by the World’s Largest Lesson: How our students see learning

1,500 students taught by Teach For Pakistan Fellows participated in the global Transforming Education Survey by Worlds Largest Lesson as a way to include student voices to the education landscape by sharing about their own education and their ideas for change. Results from this survey gave us a deeper look into how students feel about their learning journeys and what teachers must do to facilitate them. Read on to see their insightful responses:

  • Less than 10% of students responded they attend school to get good grades and pass exams. 88% attend school to achieve bigger aspirations
  • 86% of students claim they are already learning skills needed to drive change; courage, teamwork, kindness, and resilience
  • Students recognized practical skill attainment as something they feel they lack, and would change about their education
  • 100% of students felt they had fallen behind due to school closures in COVID-19 – a reminder that the impact of two disruptive years still persists

These responses are significant not only because they situate students as critical stakeholders in conversations on education, but also because they help inform what we do in service of our students’ needs. These responses also signify that students from low-income communities are deeply driven by their own vision and goals, and many of them are aware of the environment needed to be conducive to their learning.

To all of you celebrating, we wish you a joyful and blessed Eid!

Your support ensures that our Fellows are constantly able to grow their learning and skills in pursuit of their students’ greatness, and we hope to keep partnering with you in an effort to sustain our Fellows’ efforts and our students’ dreams.
