Therapy for ecuadorian children to break the cycle

As we move forward in our mission, we celebrate significant milestones within our community. Today, several families are nearing graduation from our program, a testament to their dedication and the profound changes they have made in their domestic environments. These families stand as beacons of hope, proving that sustainable change is possible even in the most challenging contexts.

However, the path remains complex. In some households, there is still much work to be done. We continue to receive reports of child labor, a reality that reinforces our commitment to stay present and provide the necessary tools to protect the rights of these children. Our team remains vigilant, working hand-in-hand with parents to prioritize education and safety over labor.

In our effort to broaden the horizons of our beneficiaries, we recently visited the Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum (MAAC). The children enjoyed an enriching experience at the Ludobiblioteca (toy-library), where they listened to storytelling and engaged with literature in a playful environment. They also toured the museum galleries, connecting with history and modern artistic expressions.

A moment of immense pride for the foundation was the performance of the JUCONI Children’s Choir. Our talented group was invited to sing at the opening ceremony of a new exhibition hall within the MAAC. Their voices not only filled the museum with music but also served as a powerful reminder of the potential that flourishes when children are given a safe space to develop their talents.

The rising insecurity in the sector has forced us to evolve. Recently, two families participating in our program had to flee their homes to seek safety. Despite the physical distance, the bond with JUCONI remains unbroken. We have successfully transitioned to a virtual accompaniment model for them. Both the children and their parents have shown extraordinary resilience, demonstrating a deep commitment to continuing their therapeutic process.

In observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, JUCONI organized a day of reflection and awareness. This event served as a crucial space to identify the different types of violence—physical, emotional, and sexual—and to redefine the role of women in society. Crucially, the workshop also engaged men, encouraging them to reflect on their behaviors and understand their responsibility in ending violence.

Despite the significant challenges we have faced this year—from displacement to safety risks—JUCONI stands firm. We remain by the side of every child and adolescent, unwavering in our mission to create childhoods free from violence. Our resolve is stronger than the obstacles, and together with our partners, we continue to build a safer, more promising future for Ecuador’s youth.

Currently, Fundación JUCONI is working 100% within the Socio Vivienda II sector. However, due to ongoing safety concerns, family therapy sessions have been relocated. Instead of being held inside the homes of the families, they are now conducted in a small house that JUCONI owns within the community. This change has proven to be highly effective, providing greater security for both the team and the beneficiaries. Families have embraced this new model, recognizing its importance and benefits.

Nevertheless, there is still much work to be done. Many children continue to experience fear when leaving their homes or going to school, afraid of being caught in crossfire. To help them process these emotions, JUCONI has organized several art therapy and recreational workshops, creating safe spaces for children to channel their anxiety and fear in healthier ways.

In addition, JUCONI has carried out several community-building activities. For example, an Olympic-style football tournament was held, where children formed their own teams and competed, promoting both sports and community unity. To celebrate Children’s Day, beneficiaries enjoyed a special trip on the Morgan boat along the Guayas River—an uplifting experience that allowed them to step away, even briefly, from the violence that overshadows their daily lives.

JUCONI also joined the campaign for the International Day against Sexual Harassment in Schools by organizing an event at the local school in Socio Vivienda II, where students delivered talks and activities to raise awareness and address this pressing issue. Finally, for International Youth Day, JUCONI hosted a community celebration that brought together children, adolescents, teachers, and parents. Young participants performed theater and dance presentations, while the school band played, creating an inspiring atmosphere. During the event, youth were reminded of their potential to change their lives, pursue their dreams, and help build a better, more peaceful world.
