Walking together beyond limits!
By Serena Natali | Project assistant
Rehabilitation session
During the last monitoring mission, thanks to the holiday campaign we managed to allocate nourishment. It has been pleasant to see how much surprised and cheerful families were.
Our project coordinator Marina met a lot of people and volunteers of the Tiyende Pamodzi group, they explained to her what extent the disabled children’s life has changed since the project started. Before that, they were not considered and abandoned by the society. Through this program and the incredible work that Marina has done, they can now feel as an integral part of the community.
Recently the children number enrolled in the rehabilitation program is raising; with the purchase of sanitary principals we can’t cover all the expenses needed and unfortunately the fixed budget is not enough. Furthermore in Malawi there aren’t drugs for general diseases and the therapy for disabled people is not included in the hospital structure.
As our project coordinator sad: ” It was exciting to see kids playing and bringing across the villages this disabled children in their wheelchair. They were the same children that a few time ago couldn’t even see sun light because they were used to live laying down in their shed!”

Finally we can walk!
By Francesca Moratti | Project Leader
S.A. before getting the prosthesis
During these months we bought several lower limb prostheses to help children and adults to walk.
We helped S.A., as you can see in the picture: when he started to attend his rehabilitation sessions with the new prosthesis it was as if he was reborn! We also helped 3 young women who could share moments of deep joy together.
But we still need a great number of wheelchairs and special walking frames, for many people who are still waiting.
Angela, our project coordinator, is now in Malawi for the annual monitoring mission. She’ll be meeting the local staff and she’ll assist two rehabilitation sessions of theTiyende Pamodzi Group. Father Kimu, the local coordinator, is coming to Italy in September and he will come to Aleimar on the 27th, when Angela will be back from Malawi. It’ll be a good occasion for an exchange.

Rehabilitation session
The TiyendePamodzi Group and the physiotherapist Gift are doing a great work for the project “Let’s walk together”.
Several meetings have been organized with village leaders in order to sensitize the population about the problem of disability, widespread all over the Country.
32 volunteers attanded a course of physiotherapy in order to best meet the needs of people with disabilities and their families.
Since the beginning of the year, 23 adults and 176 children have attended rehabilitation sessions. During these meetings food is provided to all the children and their carers, and the undernourished children receive extra food.
19 sanitary principals were bought: among them wheelchairs, special walking frames and prostheses. We still need to buy many other principals to help a huge number of children to have a peaceful life and as normal as possible, but unfortunately the economic resources do not allow it. This is why sometimes we are obliged to make a selection among these children. It is the story of S., a two years old child who was obliged to amputate his leg because of a bad infection. We bought a prosthesis for him and now he has started the rehabilitation which will allow him to walk in less than one year.
