At 21, life should be as vibrant as a blooming flower, filled with youthful energy and passion for university adventures. However, for Zhi Zhi (a pseudonym), this stage of life became one that could never be relived.
During her university years, Zhi Zhi was diagnosed with a neck nerve tumor. Post-surgery, she developed syringomyelia, a condition causing hypersensitivity in her peripheral nerves. As a result, Zhi Zhi experienced seizures triggered by vibrations, noise, and bright lights. She had to spend the last phase of her university life in the hospital.
Zhi Zhi's condition created a significant dependency on her family for medical care and assistance with daily hygiene. This dependency led to a relationship marked by both tension and intimacy, akin to a tightly stretched rubber band—any additional strain threatened to break it. Consequently, Zhi Zhi became withdrawn and hesitant to explore the outside world.
In 2022, Zhi Zhi took her first step towards reclaiming her life. She enrolled in online courses to learn about peer support for independent living. With the guidance and encouragement of experienced supporters, Zhi Zhi began to recognize her own strengths and felt capable of doing more.
Today, despite relying on a wheelchair and medication to alleviate nerve sensitivity, Zhi Zhi actively participates in assistive device training programs and accessibility inspector certification courses. She continues to acquire specialized knowledge and resources to enrich her life.
By practicing as a peer supporter and sharing her life experiences with others with disabilities, Zhi Zhi aspires to inspire more individuals. She wants to show others that "everyone has the ability to change their own lives." She also hopes to empower others with the belief that "I have a disability, but I can live the life I want."
Zhi Zhi's story is a powerful symbol of courage and hope. Her perseverance and determination are truly inspiring and deserve our admiration and respect.
