Xiao-Wu (pseudonym) is a child with severe intellectual disabilities. Whenever he encounters difficulties or things that bother him, he often repeats his concerns to the staff. Due to his limited ability to express himself, Xiao-Wu frequently feels frustrated or even angry, and once his emotions become intense, it is very difficult for him to calm down.
After long-term observation and patient companionship, the staff discovered that Xiao-Wu enjoys playing with bubbles and water. They skillfully integrated his interests by giving him a floor brush, guiding him to clean while playing with bubbles. Although he still requires one-on-one support to manage the amount of water and bubbles, this approach allows Xiao-Wu to release emotions, shift his attention, and experience a sense of accomplishment through hands-on cleaning.
Over time, Xiao-Wu has become more familiar with his environment and more emotionally stable, often spending his days in a cheerful mood.
At the beginning of the year, during an individualized service meeting, staff shared Xiao-Wu’s progress over the past year. His family was deeply moved, saying that in the past they mainly relied on comfort or restraint to manage his emotions. Now, they have learned new ways of interaction and guidance, and have also seen more possibilities in their child’s future.
