Summary

Right now this pandemic is about day to day survival for the communities we work in Kenya - COVID-19 is far from over. Everything is more difficult now. Families are struggling without income or economic support, where health facilities are overwhelmed and progress on issues like gender based violence have gone into reverse. Lives are in danger. Our programmes provide the solutions to make sure these families are not left behind as the rest of the world emerges from this pandemic.

Challenge

COVID-19 continues to spread in the community. Only 7% of the population are fully vaccinated. Healthcare facilities are under immense strain and don't have resources for the rollout. Handwashing is critical but homes don't have running water and soap is a luxury. 20 months of restrictions have left workers without an income and families are going hungry. Schools reopened but a rise in teenage pregnancy and lack of school fees mean that 16% of girls & 8% of boys never returned to education.

Solution

As vaccines arrive, we support health facilities with training for health workers, resources like fridges and transport cooler boxes, tents for setting up clinics bringing the vaccine to the people. We support vulnerable households with handwashing soap and water. Our community based programmes on sexual & reproductive health, FGM abandonment, income generating and maternal health provide education, skills, materials, ante-natal care and start up resources for small business groups.

Long-Term Impact

This project will make sure no one is left behind in surviving this pandemic. A girl finishes school giving her better options in life, she is protected from FGM and teenage pregnancy, her brother gets the seeds and tools needed to develop a fruit farm, her parents take part in community based courses breaking down barriers & leading to empowerment, her grand-parents are first in line when the vaccine arrives in her village. Health workers have what they need to safely look after her family.
