Remembering Srebrenica 20 Years Later

This month, Bosnia and the international community commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre of 1995, which saw roughly 8,500 men and boys killed simply because of their Muslim religion. The Bosnian War, and especially Srebrenica, must never be forgotten, as it marks the largest mass murder in Europe since World War II. 3 Generations is proud to partner with Sophia and Georgia Scott and Groundtruth Productions in support of their latest film In The Shadow of War, which reveals that even after twenty years, the past is not yet behind the people affected by this war and genocide. Many films have been made about the war in former Yugoslavia—dealing with the subjects of truth, justice, and reconciliation, but this is the first film which charts the long term impact the war has had on children born during or just after the war ended.

Our mission at 3 Generations is to record the stories of survivors and amplify their voices through broad outreach. In addition to In The Shadow of War, we are also thrilled to announce Rinchen Dharlo’s interview is now available on our website. Dharlo, who is currently president of the Tibet Fund, experienced firsthand the deaths of his brother and mother and was eventually forced to flee from Tibet to India. The sad truth is genocide, war, and displacement are not exclusive to any geographic or ethnic boundaries: they happen everywhere.

April: A Month of Remembrance

With April comes a significant month in remembering the atrocities of genocide. April 7 marks the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda; the date for Holocaust Remembrance day according to the Hebrew calendar falls on the 16^th April this year; and April 24^th marks the hundredth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

April also marks the 70^th Anniversary of the liberation of multiple Nazi Concentration Camps. 3 Generations’ Founder and Executive Director Jane Wells’ father Sidney Bernstein was with the Allied Forces that liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. As a film advisor to the Ministry of Information, he was responsible for overseeing the film units as they documented the atrocities found there. When Sidney Bernstein returned to the UK he was tasked with producing a feature length film, German Concentration Camps Factual Survey, about the camps the Allies liberated. He brought together some of the greatest filmmakers, writers and talent of that era to create a permanent reminder of Nazi atrocities for generations to come. In the fall of 1945, however, his Ministry of Information superiors closed down the production and the film was not completed or shown. The complex story of that film and why it was stifled was not fully told until 2014, when it became the subject of the award-winning documentary, Night Will Fall, directed by Andre Singer. On May 19 we will be hosting a fundraising screening of the film at The Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City.

These dates draw our focus to the act of remembrance and the ways in which we can best memorialize the experiences of survivors. Here at 3 Generations we believe that sharing stories through the medium of film is a significant step in the process of healing the lasting wounds caused by these atrocities. Our mission is to create a platform for the voices of survivors, and to amplify and honor their voices through as wide an outreach as possible.

"I Feel Better, Less Heavy."

3 Generations is heralding 2015 with a renewed focus on our mission to amplify and honor the voices of survivors worldwide. Within our first ever annual report resonate the words of Rwandan genocide survivor, Ann-Marie: "I am happy to tell my story because when I do I calm down, I feel better, less heavy." In both the United States and abroad, 3 Generations is working to bring the words of survivors like Ann-Marie’s to the forefront. As we write, our Development and Outreach Coordinator, Hannah Eddy, is in Rwanda providing direct reports on the state of survivors in the still recovering nation. Every report Hannah gives serves as a reminder that we must work to lighten the burden of atrocity victims worldwide today.

Ann-Marie's story is one of turbulence and terror. Yet, it is one shared by survivors worldwide including those in Cambodia, Tibet, and Rwanda. While many such stories go unheard, 3 Generations works to bring the words of victims to empathetic ears around the world. As Hannah continues her travels around Rwanda, we remain constantly aware that many survivors of Genocide share an all too often unheard darker history.

In bringing their stories to light, 3 Generations helps alleviate of the silent burden carried by genocide victims and ensure they are not alone in their struggle. 2015 brings many opportunities for 3 Generations but we could not have made this progress without your help. Look forward to more of Hannah’s reports from Rwanda as well as the many stories we will feature on our website. With your support we can help lighten the burden that plagues so many genocide survivors today. With your support we can make them "less heavy."
