Summary

Project empowers 500 climate-disaster stricken -survivors (IDPs, Returnees, locals, Persons with disabilities and Minorities.

Project methodology

• Community sensitization and awareness on the Climate and environment disasters, mitigations and innovations, and the socio-economic ramifications
• Climate change Training/sensitization on Sustainable Enterprises such as environmental sanitations, climate change innovations and impact to the socio-economic and political fabric
• Selection and engagement in production of briquettes and energy conserving cooking stoves for sustainable businesses, reduction of carbon, for deforestation and protection of the human habitat
• Community engagement in focus group discussions on climate change and environmental changes and disasters while exploring innovative solutions e.g soil erosion prevention, alerts and analysis, afforestation…planting indigenous trees
• Identification, evaluation, selection, propagation and distribution of climate –environment resilient plants, seeds and seedlings across the targeted locations with targeted persons within the project cycle. This includes sisals, acacia, mahogany..teek,sorghum, millet, lemon, cassava,
• Production of goats, sheep and bee-keeping and honey-harvesting as possible ways of diversification in the midst of challenges.

• Inter-clan Water and Land management Committee for peaceful mitigation of resource-based conflicts.

APCO thankfully acknowledges the Donors for contributing $100 to this project: Climate based innovations for disaster mitigations in Somalia. APCO is and has been working on the segment of planting and propagating agro-forestry through

• Promoting production technology packages better suited for evolving climatic and environmental conditions in target areas (providing training and technical assistance to smallholder farmers, empowering local rural communities to increase food production.
• Strengthening of current APCO-community-led irrigation sector for expanded food security investment comprising vegetables, fruit trees, ordinary trees and crops.
• Mainstreaming climate change adaptation mechanisms and systems such as water harvesting, irrigation and planting and distribution of indigenous trees, fruits, vegetables and crops including Qudhac sorghum, millet, 3 months growing hybrid maize species and legumes such as cowpeas, sesame, groundnuts, cassava which require less water than local seeds.
• planting and distribution of drought-flood and locust resistant fruits and trees such as date palms, Moringa Oleifera (drought-tolerant tree that thrives in hot, dry climates, and produces protein and iron-rich leaves and seed pods that can be eaten as vegetables; healthy food source for humans, and fodder for livestock.
• Nutrition-sensitive agriculture training, sensitization and field demonstrations e,g on planting, manuring, fertilization, propagating, tilling, weeding , harvesting, storage, packaging, marketing and selling seeds, seedlings, poultry, fruits and other auxiliary products locally and internationally.

The APCO climate change and environmental project is the best gift beyond the usual humanitarian aid as it identifies and addresses major socio-economic and political issues and realities emnating from the complexity of nature, human war and power games impacting on the Somali habitat. The project is sustainable but urgently needs funds for aa full cycle, I invite your urgent contribution that resulting shall save and sustain lives and livelihoods , costing less money compared to addressing a humanitarian emergency !
