On February 6, earthquakes devastated Syria and Turkey, causing thousands of casualties and displacing tens of thousand. HALO is working in NW Syria with the Syria Civil Defence and using our excavator, usually used for landmine clearance, to help excavate people trapped from the rubble. The huge levels of additional displaced people makes the landmine crisis even more dangerous, and HALO is on call to respond and destroy landmines & explosives to keep displaced families and aid workers safe.
People in Syria are combing through rubble in search of survivors after the devastating earthquake. At the same time, over 40% of communities in northwest Syria are contaminated by explosives like landmines & rockets from the conflict. From HALO's extensive experience working with displaced communities around the world, we know that as displaced people migrate and travel through unfamiliar areas to IDP camps the risk of accidents from landmines and other explosives greatly increases.
HALO is working in northwest Syria with the Syria Civil Defence and using our excavator, usually used for landmine clearance, to help excavate people trapped from the rubble. We will work with adults & children at IDP camps to teach them how to recognize and avoid explosives. We are also on call to respond and destroy landmines, rockets, and other explosives unearthed to keep displaced families and aid workers safe.
The HALO Trust has operated in northwest Syria since 2018. HALO's work supporting this crisis will save lives. We are excavating people trapped from rubble, working on call to safely destroy unearthed landmines and explosives, and teaching displaced adults and children what to avoid and what to do if they come across an explosive danger.
