On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Northwest Syria, including Idlib, where The HALO Trust currently works. Our colleagues in Northwest Syria report that the situation is catastrophic, with the area affected by the earthquake being the center for over 1.8 million displaced Syrians who were already suffering after a decade of conflict.
HALO Trust is responding to this crisis, rapidly assessing needs, and providing rubble removal, health assistance, and risk education, as thousands of more people are moving into IDP camps and aren’t aware of the dangers of IEDs, landmines, and other unexploded ordnances.
We have over 50 locally hired staff in Northern Syria divided into teams that specialize in both locating and mapping explosives and clearing land for safe use. They are trained on providing paramedical assistance and support.
Last week, we deployed our excavator to a neighborhood in Al-Atareb city for rubble removal. We removed rubble from a sewing workshop and from a three-story building next door. In the coming days we will continue to remove rubble in this area.
We are truly grateful to everyone supporting this project – thank you.
