This project will support the women's activities at the community centre of Movement on the Ground in Kara Tepe, a refugee camp for the 1200 most vulnerable families and children on the Greek island of Lesvos. Because we believe that empowered women stand at the heart of the refugee camp that is dignified, sustainable, and safe.
When you are a Syrian refugee, everything in your life is insecure. You don't know where you will be able to gain asylum or how long you will have to wait. In addition to stress and trauma, the Syrian residents of refugee camps are there for longer and more uncertain time frames. Through this project, taking place on Kara Tepe refugee camp we aim to empower the Syrian women population through nutritional, sustainable and inspiring activities that appeal to their culture.
Due to poor conditions and less appealing activities we will fulfill regular, weekly activities such as traditional dancing, sewing and informal education for Syrian women in our women friendly community center. In addition, we will be providing community cooking for Syrian women in our mobile kitchen so they can enjoy the taste of their roots again, By including them and motivating them in their self-reliance their mental and physical health improves.
Women at the moment face a lot of pressure from their families while their lives are uncertain in the refugee camps. By providing these activities: women can harness their skills, gain new skills, build their community together, share culture, spend time in an inspiring way, relieve stress, & gain strength through this difficult time. By regaining their strength they will be able to continue their journeys. By empowering women, we are also empowering their children, families & wider community.
