Tablets for disadvantaged children in Romania

Since our last report, we regret to inform our supporters that no new funds have been received for the project. As a result, we have not been able to implement additional activities or distribute new tablets and internet connectivity packages to disadvantaged children during this reporting period. The project remains active and ready for implementation as soon as sufficient resources become available. The initiative continues to aim at providing children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds with the digital tools necessary to access education and participate fully in the learning process.

The fundraising environment has become increasingly challenging. Romania continues to face significant economic pressures, including rising living costs and increased financial uncertainty for households and businesses. Non-profit organizations across the country have experienced greater difficulties in attracting donations, as many individuals and companies have had to prioritize their essential expenses and adjust charitable giving accordingly.

Despite the lack of incoming funds, the need addressed by this project remains highly relevant. Many vulnerable children still face barriers to educational opportunities due to limited access to digital devices and connectivity. The original objective of supporting children from economically deprived environments with tablets and internet access continues to be an important priority for our organization.

During this period, we have maintained our commitment to the project by keeping communication channels open, monitoring community needs, and remaining prepared to restart implementation once funding becomes available. We continue to believe that access to digital education is a critical factor in reducing educational inequalities and improving long-term opportunities for vulnerable children.

We would like to sincerely thank all donors and supporters who have contributed to this initiative over the years. Your previous support has helped demonstrate the importance of ensuring equal access to education for every child. We remain hopeful that future donations will enable us to continue pursuing the project's goal of supporting disadvantaged children throughout Romania.

From Access to Awareness: Supporting Youth

During this reporting period, our work has focused less on expanding equipment and more on understanding how young people engage with the digital tools they already have access to.

In several informal sessions organized with small groups of youth, we observed how technology is increasingly used not only for entertainment, but also as a support for schoolwork and personal interests. In this context, artificial intelligence tools have naturally become part of their digital environment.

Through guided discussions and simple exercises, some participants explored how AI can assist with structuring homework, generating ideas, or explaining difficult concepts. For example, during one session, a student used an AI-based tool to better organize an essay, while another experimented with generating visual content to illustrate a story. These moments, although modest, showed how access to digital tools can support confidence and curiosity.

At the same time, these interactions also revealed important challenges.

Without proper guidance, young people may rely too heavily on AI tools, using them to complete tasks without fully understanding the content. In several conversations, participants themselves expressed uncertainty about when and how it is appropriate to use such tools. This raises important questions about critical thinking, authenticity, and responsible use of technology.

We also noted that for some youth, especially those already facing educational gaps, the ease of AI-generated answers can become a barrier rather than a support—reducing motivation to engage deeply with learning processes.

For this reason, our approach has been to introduce not only access, but also reflection.

During facilitated group discussions, we encouraged participants to question:

what it means to learn versus to generate answers,
how to verify information,
and why their own voice and understanding remain important.

These conversations were simple but meaningful. They helped shift the focus from “what technology can do” to “how we choose to use it.”

This period has reinforced an important lesson for our work:
digital inclusion today is not only about providing devices, but also about supporting the development of responsible and conscious digital habits.

Looking ahead, we aim to continue integrating these reflective practices into our activities—ensuring that access to technology goes hand in hand with guidance, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility.

Digital inequality and a dream still waiting

Sometimes, the hardest reports to write are the ones where progress has been slower than we hoped.
This is one of those moments.

Over the past months, our team worked continuously to secure the resources needed for the Tablets for Disadvantaged Children in Romania initiative. However, due to insufficient funds and the absence of dedicated sponsors, we were unable to procure and distribute devices to the children who need them most.

Yet the need has not disappeared.
The children waiting have not disappeared.
And their stories are still unfolding.

Meet Ana — a girl from rural Romania whose dream doesn’t fit inside her home

Ana is twelve years old and lives in a small village tucked between rolling hills and long unpaved roads. The view is beautiful. The opportunities… less so.

Every morning, she walks 2 kilometers to school, her shoes often muddy, her notebooks worn thin from reuse.
But in the afternoons—when homework now requires online research, or reading materials shared only electronically—Ana is cut off from the world other children access with a single tap.

Her family shares an old phone with a cracked screen and limited data.
When the network disappears, which happens often, Ana simply closes her book and whispers:

“Maybe tomorrow I can try again.”

Tomorrow.
Always tomorrow.

Why digital tools matter more than ever

For children like Ana, a tablet is not a luxury.
It is:

a classroom, when teachers upload materials online
a library, when rural schools lack books
a tutor, when lessons are hard to follow
a bridge, connecting them to the same world as urban students
a future, in a country where digital skills are becoming essential for every job

When children don’t have access to digital tools, they fall behind—not because they lack talent or ambition, but because the world is running faster than the resources around them.

Ana doesn’t dream of becoming famous or rich.
She dreams of becoming a nurse, “to help people the way nobody helped us,” she says shyly.

But without a device, her homework, digital textbooks, and online school platforms remain out of reach.

What we learned this quarter

Although the project did not move forward in procurement, it has reminded us of something crucial:

Digital exclusion is one of the most painful forms of modern poverty.

We remain committed to this project because the children who wait for it are real, and their needs grow each month.

We learned:

that rural families are more digitally disconnected than ever
that children continue to be penalized academically through no fault of their own
that the demand for devices is higher than our initial estimates
that families are eager to participate, but unable to bridge the digital gap alone

Most importantly, we learned that this project matters—deeply and urgently.

How you can help

The reason we have not been able to deliver tablets yet is simple:
we need support.

Every contribution—no matter how small—brings us one step closer to placing a device in the hands of a child like Ana.

A single tablet can:

transform a child’s academic future
give them equal footing with their peers
open doors to learning, creativity, and connection
