One in every three Indonesian children, or 1.5 million kids each year, finishes primary school unable to read and understand a simple text. Unless this changes, they will remain unable to take advantage of even basic education and economic opportunities. Teachers are at the heart of this challenge: most Indonesian teachers (over two-thirds) have never been trained how to teach reading in a way that's fun and effective, and have no reading books in their classrooms. The Saya Suka Membaca ("I Love Reading") program equips teachers across Indonesia to teach reading effectively by providing them with high-quality teaching materials, culturally relevant reading books, practical training and on-going mentoring. Through this project we aim to train at least 100 teachers who work in poor communities to use a simplified version of our curriculum. They will learn to teach reading using proven tools that help children learn to read - and make reading fun!
Reading is the beginning. For these 3,000 children it will be the foundation of their education, enabling them to lead happier, healthier, more productive lives. In time, they'll teach their own children to read. We already have evidence that our program works: an external evaluation measured a 54% greater increase in basic literacy skills for kids taught with our curriculum.
