From Design to Print: A 3D Printing Workshop

Over the months we did a three-day, hands-on 3D printing workshop in Arusha. Participants moved from core concepts to printing their own models. They learned the fundamentals of additive manufacturing, including materials, the main printer types (FDM, SLA, SLS) and design file formats. They practiced loading filament, slicing models, running prints and troubleshooting. They also explored how 3D printing can help solve local challenges in education, health and entrepreneurship.

Impact

The workshop gave participants practical skills and a clear view of where they could use them:

  • Hands-on technical skills: Participants worked in three groups to design models, slice them and run live prints. Each participant printed a model of their choice to take home.
  • Skills they can keep using: Participants learned to download and edit existing models, so they can keep designing after the workshop.
  • Practical applications: Participants explored three ways to use 3D printing: testing a solution through rapid prototyping, making one part of a larger system (such as an enclosure or adapter), and making the whole solution (such as low-cost tools or assistive devices).
  • Career and business pathways: Each participant discussed how 3D printing could apply to their own career, studies or business.
  • Innovation mindset: The design sprint and model presentations-built confidence in turning ideas into physical products.

Next Steps

  • Support participants to keep designing and printing, using the models and skills from the workshop to develop real solutions.
  • Connect participants' ideas to the Innovation Club and Creative Capacity Building programs, so 3D printing becomes a prototyping tool for community-focused projects.
  • Collect participant feedback and run further workshops to reach more young people.

Thanks to your support through GlobalGiving, girls and women have gained access to digital tools like 3D printer and gained knowledge of how they can apply them in real life.
