Challenge

Teaching in Kenyan rural areas relies on lecture, whole-class oral repetition and minimum student centred learning and use of teaching materials. As a result, only a quarter of Roko 20 Grade 5 pupils achieved over 50% in end year exams. The Government introduced a more student-centred approach to teaching with the new Competency Based Curriculum however an ineffective Government training programme did not give teachers adequate training to implement these new and improved teaching methods.

Solution

We will provide 3 weeks of workshop intensive teacher training to improve the quality of teaching and shift beliefs and attitudes focusing on the new CBC system. In addition 6 days of school based coaching during term time will focus on Instructional Leadership, Learner Engagement, and School Culture. Essential to any training is follow-up support to ensure implementation in the classroom and we have secured funding from a UK voluntary organisation to provide ongoing teacher support for 1 yr.

Long-Term Impact

The project will ensure teachers give our students a quality primary school education empowering them to reach their full potential and an opportunity to be placed in the best Secondary Schools. With a decent education comes the prospect of a good job or university placement in order to break free from the cycle of poverty, positively impacting the lives of their families and the community as a whole.
