Summary

This project of Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa (APF) in rural Haiti is to teach trades to young people (tailoring and cooking), so that they have a way to earn income. When a young person in the rural sectors of Haiti feels they have no future, no alternatives, they frequently leave for the capital Port-au-Prince (PAP), and sometimes fall prey to gangs. PAP is no place for Haiti's future entrepreneurs. The future of Haiti lies in the rural sectors, and this small project is just one way to assist.

Challenge

Fondwa is an area of around 10,000 residents in the mountains of Haiti. As the country faces one challenge after another -- from insecurity, to lack of government resources, to natural disasters -- the youth find it difficult to envision a future for themselves, and for their country. Many leave the rural areas for the capital, Port-au-Prince. Some end up in gangs.

Solution

APF believes the future of Haiti will come from the engagement and development of the rural sectors. APF wants their youth to have opportunities, whether it be primary or higher education, or skills development, so that they will remain in their rural communities to take part in self-improvement and community development.

Long-Term Impact

Like most rural areas of Haiti, the community of Fondwa is extremely under-served. Yet, these motivated people have organized themselves and provided for themselves for 30 years ... not only in healthcare, but schools, infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, and capacity building through their peasant association, APF. The more youth trained with a skill, the more that will remain in the area to increase economic activity.
