Summary

Since 2008, Shanghai Roots & Shoots has been dedicated to improving the personal health and hygiene of migrant children living in Shanghai. In 2019, a new initiative was launched to raise public awareness of proper puberty education for migrant children, which they cannot access through parents and schools. The project plans to ensure that migrant children, parents, and teachers from migrant schools can receive a better puberty education to improve puberty health for migrant children.

Challenge

Children often face concerns about body changes when they reach puberty. However, many parents are ill-prepared to deliver puberty education at home. This problem is particularly pronounced in families of migrant workers in China. Many find it embarrassing to discuss the topic while others deem it of little importance or unnecessary. On the other hand, teachers at migrant schools lack the proper education resources on puberty. Such children are often left alone to deal with physical changes.

Solution

The project plans to work with professionals and teachers to develop educational materials and lessons suitable for migrant children. The migrant children will receive an education package including picture books and leaflets on puberty health which is designed for both children and their parents. Also, tailored puberty lessons and workshops will be delivered to children, parents, and teachers in migrant schools to understand the physical and psychological changes in children during puberty.

Long-Term Impact

An estimate of 5,000 children from migrant families will be involved and equipped with proper puberty knowledge, which may prevent them from potential abuse while preparing themselves to grow into healthy, independent, confident young men and women. Also, 5,000 parents and teachers are expected to receive training on puberty education, which will allow them to ensure a safe and healthy childhood for migrant children.
