Recovery efforts for the devastating and deadly tornadoes unfortunately aligned with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, complicating the rebuild for people impacted by the disaster. COVID-19 hit locally just weeks after the March 3 tornadoes that took at least 25 lives.
As the pandemic impacted the local economy, people already struggling from the natural disaster had more challenges to contend with. Even a month after the storms, people we’re still filing claims seeking support for recovery.
As of April 17, people impacted by these March 3 tornadoes had filed more than 15,000 claims of more than $1.1 billion, according to an article on Tennessean. Just days earlier, on April 12, another string of tornadoes had swept across southern areas of the state causing more devastating damage.
Thank you for your support of our programs as we respond to disasters within the pandemic. Everyone is just one disaster away from poverty, and your support makes a big difference during this difficult time in individuals' lives.
