Summary

JAKON RATE is a multigenerational association that is building an educational center for the Shipibo-Konibo and their allies to practice, learn, and advance the application of their Indigenous worldview, wisdom, language, and customs to live in balance with the Jakon Nete - 'the life-giving good world'. We have acquired land and ask for your help to build our school, which is inspired by the great grandmother Manuela Mahua Ahuanari and her true name: Jakon Rate - 'A Life-Giving Good Surprise'!

Challenge

For nearly 400 years, especially the past 4 decades, Shipibo-Konibo communities, leaders, and culture have been assaulted to usher in a colonial Eurocentric hegemonic cultural paradigm. Their assimilation into the Peruvian national society and economy has caused their culture, language, and traditional stories to become 'pitiful remnants' of their origins or lost completely. The end of intergenerational transmission of customs and language threaten to erase the memory of Shipibo-Konibo wisdom.

Solution

THE JAKON RATE CENTER FOR SHIPIBO-KONIBO STUDIES is helping to bridge the educational gap created by colonization by providing a scholarly hub for traditional practices to be regenerated, relearned, and disseminated throughout their nation. The creation of a pilot school founded on the essence of their cultural wisdom and complementary trainings and seminars for children, adults, and teachers alike, will help to regenerate the intergenerational transmission of their cultural memory and wisdom.

Long-Term Impact

Waziyatawin & Yellow Bird (2012) define DECOLONIZATION as the meaningful and active resistance to the forces of colonialism that perpetuate the subjugation and/or exploitation of Indigenous minds, bodies, and lands. Decolonization is engaged for the ultimate purpose of overturning the colonial structure and realizing Indigenous liberation. JAKON RATE works to promote events and processes of Indigenous Decolonization to demonstrate viable methods that can be replicated by all Indigenous Nations
