Jakón Néte!
The rains are coming and the flood waters are now beginning to rise. For the past three months of the dry season we were able to build 4 small cabins for students.
Over the past 30 days we have planted more than 1 hectare (2.47 acres) of land with 5 varieties of plantains to help feed us through the next year.
We also recently planted 170 medicinal and timber trees, bushes, and vines!
These have been slow processes with the ongoing state of emergency, and we continue to stay healthy as Jakon Rate's dream begins to take shape!
Our organization is inspired and guided by the great grandmother whose Shipibo-Konibo name means ‘A Life-Giving Good Surprise’. We are dedicated to creating spaces and facilitating opportunities to practice, learn, and transmit the ancestral wisdom of the Shipibo-Konibo Nation to future generations for the collective wellbeing of life in the Amazon Rainforest and beyond.
The intergenerational transmission of cultural memory, wisdom, and language is a crucial action for the defense and wellbeing of the Shipibo-Konibo Nation, their families, their sovereignty, and their land.
Realizing our vision will require a lot of dedication and support. Currently we are planting staple foods like corn and manioc root, along with a variety of plants for our medicine cupboard. We still need to raise funds for a final plot of land ideal for farming and materiales to continue construction on two more student cabins.
The best way you can help and be part of this mission is to come and participate in a educational samá or sign up for online Shipibo-Konibo language lessons!
Or by sending a donation today to make The Jakon Rate Center for Shipibo-Konibo Studies a reality. Every bit helps and it is possible to set up monthly recurring donations that are tax deductible for USA citizens.
We look forward to hearing from you and wish you all the best.
The Jakon Rate family!
