Thriving Plants and Solar Energy in the Rainy Season

By B R Best | Project Ally

JAKON RATE is a multigenerational association that aims to provide an educational space for the Shipibo-Konibo and their allies to practice, learn and advance the application of their Indigenous worldview, wisdom, language and customs to live in balance with the Jakon Nete - ‘the life-giving good world.’ JAKON RATE serves as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern practice, fostering cultural exchange in addition to environmental stewardship.

Environmental Conservation - Pacha Nishi

For the second year in a row we have partnered with Pacha Nishi, an ongoing project with the goal of planting 200,000 nishi (Banisteriopsis caapi) in addition to companion trees to help establish an ongoing and sustainable source of nishi for future generations while also restoring the natural diversity of fungal, plant and animal habitats. Over December 2024 and January we have reforested over 1 hectare (2.47 acres) with 7 varieties for a total of 224 trees. We have also established an irrigation system to help provide the necessary water during the following dry season. Meanwhile the first quarter hectare (0.62 acres) has survived its first summer and is flourishing with the current rains.

Beginning our Conversion to Solar Power

Through generous donations we are now able to initiate the center's conversion to solar energy. For the first 6 years we have operated with a gasoline powered generator to provide our electrical needs for charging flashlights and phones, and pumping water from our well. Now we will be installing the first panel and converter of a system that we hope can mitigate our need for gasoline. With a second panel and 2 large batteries we can generate and store enough power to run the water pump whenever needed.

JAKON RATE continues to thrive in its mission to preserve Indigenous wisdom, contribute to environmental conservation, and provide a space of learning to all. We are grateful to our supporters, donors, staff, and community for their dedication and commitment to our shared vision.

Thank you for your ongoing support and belief in the continuation of traditional Shipibo-Konibo culture!
