Summary

Women refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) around the world have multiple humanitarian needs; among them are the challenges of managing menstruation safely, privately and with dignity. Days for Girls (DfG) meets the needs of displaced people who menstruate by providing washable, long-lasting menstrual Kits and vital health education. Prioritizing areas with the highest need, our refugee outreach began in Uganda, expanded into Lebanon and Chad, and now also includes Jordan.

Challenge

Each year, countless refugees and IDPs are left without access to menstrual products due to conflicts and disasters. Humanitarian response often lacks a gender-inclusive lens and typically underfunds or excludes menstrual products and services in their emergency efforts. As a result, women and girls often lack access to safe, effective menstrual products and critical menstrual health information - leading to uninformed health decisions which perpetuate stigma and misinformation.

Solution

DfG Kits are washable and long-lasting, which is important to a refugee or IDP with limited resources. Kits include 2 waterproof pads, 8 liners, a washcloth, a bar of soap, 2 pairs of panties, a waterproof carry pouch and a Care & Use sheet all inside a drawstring bag. Our Kits are a simple way for women and girls to gain bodily autonomy, regardless of citizenship status. Our health education includes how and why we menstruate, anatomy, hygiene, Kit care, self defense, and human trafficking.

Long-Term Impact

DfG Kits are designed to last 3+ years when care instructions are followed. This provides a long-term solution that shows women and girls that they matter, shattering the shame that often surrounds menstruation. The education that comes with our Kits can increase body confidence, decrease anxiety, and help women and girls make informed health decisions. This critical knowledge will be passed to friends and relatives - creating a positive cycle of empowerment that transforms entire communities.
