Summary

The Public-Private Alliance Foundation (PPAF) promotes innovations for clean cooking in Haiti. Most families endure a poverty-respiratory disease-deforestation trap of dependence on charcoal for cooking. PPAF, with Haitian and other collaborators, helps local groups combat this by introducing & monitoring the use of solar cookstoves, as well as biodigesters for biogas & garden fertilizer. We are working to promote sustainable development, empower women & girls & combat climate change.

Challenge

Most Haitian families burn charcoal to cook their daily meals. This has tremendous negative effects on environment and health. Hillsides are denuded of firewood and soil slides into the sea. Households, especially women and children, are afflicted by respiratory diseases. A large part of family income is spent on this cooking fuel. Known alternatives are expensive or unavailable.

Solution

PPAF leads a Haitian & USA-based group to help mobilize families to use solar cookers, & also biodigesters for biogas, to overcome dependency on charcoal. Demand is growing. We created Haiti's 1st university course on this; we support testing, demonstrations & training sessions; we are initiating the commercialization of solar cooking & we promote this at the UN & elsewhere. The project addresses climate concerns, engages local groups, documents innovations & promotes additional efforts.

Long-Term Impact

The project establishes leverage & potential for broader adoption. The classes are eye-openers for students & community members, who see immediately verifiable results. This stimulates a desire to own & use solar cookers & biodigesters, & to promote them locally. Our group is building impact in & around 3 Haitian cities. We are working with solar cooker companies & we contribute to Solar Cookers International, the Clean Cooking Alliance & achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
