Report 27 – Solar Cooking Innovations in Haiti

Dear friends and supporters,

People in Haiti currently face a dreadful situation.  Gang violence and political chaos prevail, especially in the capital city. This week the Prime Minister resigned, blocked from returning to the country from foreign travel.  Steps toward transition to a new government, supported by international and national actors, are just getting underway. Fortunately, PPAF's colleagues are far from the turmoil. They are worried but moving ahead.

In such circumstances, our work for solar cooking is even more important.  Availability and prices of food and fuel have become big problems.  The free fuel of sunshine helps to reduce cash outlays and increase the reliability of household support.

The first shipments of solar cooker kits for PPAF have arrived.  Since our last report to GlobalGiving Haitian colleagues have been conducting demonstrations, making sales, and providing training in Hinche and Jacmel. They are also reaching out through Facebook, WhatsApp, and recorded interviews.

We hope you will be as excited as we are when you read this update, see the attached photos and view the videos.

The lead photo for this report shows two of our representatives, Aline in Hinche and Fedno in Jacmel. Each has created a YouTube that highlights their solar cooking innovations. Please look for these in the attached links to this report. Aline illustrates many events in churches, schools, orphanages, and community groups. She and her husband Elie typically bring fifteen or more solar cookers from collaborators Haines Solar Cookers, LLC. and Solar Oven Reflectors, LLC.  The events often draw 500 or more attendees.  They have provided lunches with various foods to show what solar cookers can do. They sell some solar cooker kits on the spot and arrange for follow-up.

Fedno’s YouTube, in Creole (with English subtitles), aims for local viewers to learn about the assembly and uses of Haines solar cookers, and promotes sales. In addition, Fedno has provided the YouTube of his Creole-language interview for TripFoumi Enfo, a local Facebook broadcast. That has gained some 2,000 views along with many comments and shares.

The first two shipments of kits for Hinche came through an airfreight piggyback arrangement with a US collaborator, direct to central Haiti, and did not need to pass through Port-au-Prince.  We hope this will again be possible if/when Haiti’s crisis subsides. Two shipments for Jacmel came through a piggyback arrangement with our friends at the Art Creation Foundation for Children (ACFFC). These passed through Port-au-Prince, but before everything became impossible.

We want to acknowledge and thank our collaborators in these exciting steps.  The work by colleagues in churches, schools, orphanages, and elsewhere around Hinche relies on SunDome Solar Ovens, from Solar Oven Reflectors, LLC. (gifts) and Haines Solar Cookers, LLC. (for sale).   The work in Jacmel relies on purchases from Haines.  Our friends at Solar Education Project/GDS have provided a training manual that we use at both sites.  We are glad to call upon several organizations and individuals for advice and to lend a hand.  Going forward, we intend to create and build small business opportunities, including local assembly and distribution.

Thanks to all for your support!
