This quarterly report presents the planning and early groundwork of the "Train 3,000 Widows in Snail Farming" project, led by the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF).
This initiative aims to empower 3,000 widows across Southeastern Nigeria by equipping them with climate-smart snail farming skills to improve livelihoods, promote food security, and foster economic independence.
Despite not receiving external funding yet, SOHF remains committed to mobilizing local resources, strategic partnerships, and innovative financial inclusion platforms such as SOHF' FinTech Solutions® and Thrive UpliftTrust Ltd (TUT Empower®) to support the widows' entrepreneurial journey.
Project Overview
This project specifically targets:
Widows in underserved communities, many of whom are marginalized, economically vulnerable, and affected by rural poverty.
Capacity-building in heliculture (snail farming), offering a low-cost, high-return agribusiness opportunity.
Economic empowerment by providing training, starter kits (snail pens, breeders, feeds), and linking beneficiaries to microcredit via TUT Empower®.
Financial inclusion through SOHF' FinTech Solutions®, helping widows save, access insurance, and build credit history.
Activities Undertaken this Quarter
Baseline Survey and Widow Mapping:
Conducted field assessments in 20 Local Government Areas across Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra States.
Identified and registered 3,200 eligible widows, to prioritize 3,000 for Phase 1 training.
Training Curriculum Development:
Designed customized modules focusing on:
Basic snail biology and breeding techniques.
Organic feed production from local waste.
Small-scale farm management and profitability strategies.
Environmental-friendly farming practices.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Held townhall meetings with community leaders and women's associations to strengthen buy-in and commitment.
Strategic Financing Partnerships:
Engaged Thrive UpliftTrust Ltd (TUT Empower®) to provide microloans and startup grants for farm establishment.
Integrated the use of SOHF' FinTech Solutions® for digital onboarding, tracking, and fund disbursement.
Challenges Faced
Funding Deficit:
Lack of external financial support has delayed mass rollout of training and distribution of starter kits.
Logistical Barriers:
Limited rural road access and transportation for training and monitoring purposes.
Technology Access:
Some widows, especially in remote villages, have limited access to smartphones or digital literacy.
Solutions Implemented
Resource Mobilization Strategy:
Prioritized local donations, community-driven contributions, and small seed grants from internal SOHF resources to start with pilot clusters.
Phased Training Rollout:
Plan to train 500 widows in clusters immediately once minimum resources are secured, then scale in batches.
Digital Financial Literacy Workshops:
Partnered with local youth volunteers to train widows on mobile phone use and financial literacy, supporting their integration into SOHF' FinTech Solutions®.
Future Prospects
Sustainable Income Generation:
Each trained widow is expected to produce 500–1000 snails within six months, enabling reinvestment and scaling of their micro-enterprises.
Social Impact Scaling:
Trained widows will act as ambassadors and mentors for new groups, creating a ripple effect of economic empowerment.
Environmental Contribution:
Promoting snail farming reduces pressure on natural ecosystems compared to traditional livestock farming, supporting a healthier environment.
Strategic Market Access:
SOHF is building partnerships with local restaurants, cosmetics producers (for snail slime), and export businesses to guarantee off-take of farmed snails.
Alignment with UN SDGs:
Directly contributes to SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
Conclusion
The Train 3,000 Widows in Snail Farming project stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for rural widows in Southeast Nigeria.
While the journey faces hurdles, SOHF’s commitment, strategic alliances with TUT Empower® for funding, and digital transformation via SOHF' FinTech Solutions® have fortified the foundation for impactful delivery.
With funding support, we are poised to launch a transformative wave of climate-smart, women-led agribusiness in Nigeria's rural landscape.
Best regards,
Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF)
