Thousands of women in rural Nigeria give birth without skilled help, raising the risk of death and long-term injury. This project will train 50 midwives to deliver safe birth care and health education to 2,000 pregnant women and new mothers. Training will cover safe delivery, hygiene, danger signs, and how to support recovery after childbirth. Trained midwives will return to serve women in underserved areas.
Many women in Nigeria deliver at home or with untrained helpers. In rural and low-income areas, skilled midwives are too few or too far away. This leads to bleeding, infection, or death during childbirth. Most of these problems are preventable if trained birth attendants are present and can act quickly when problems arise.
This project will train 50 midwives in safe birth practices, early warning signs, and postnatal care. Training will use plain language, practical examples, and basic tools. Midwives will return to their communities to help pregnant women deliver safely, monitor recovery, and educate families on how to spot and respond to health risks during childbirth.
With better-trained midwives, more women will survive childbirth and more babies will be born safely. Families will have someone to call when labor starts or problems arise. Midwives can also share health tips that reduce illness and poor feeding practices in newborns. Skilled birth care can help reduce deaths and injuries during childbirth in rural areas.
